BARUJ SALINAS
(1935-2024)
Baruj Salinas was a Cuban-American contemporary visual artist and architect whose lyrical abstractions earned him international acclaim over a career spanning six decades. Deeply informed by his Cuban heritage, Jewish identity, and universal spiritual themes, Salinas’ works explored language, memory, and transcendence through vibrant gestural depictions of nature, celestial forms, and atmospheric space.
Since his first solo exhibition in 1962, Salinas’ art has been featured in numerous solo and group exhibitions at leading museums and galleries across the Americas, Europe, and Asia. Institutions such as the Museo de Arte Moderno and the Museo José Luis Cuevas in Mexico City, as well as the Jewish Museum of Florida at Florida International University, have presented major exhibitions, among many others. His legacy is represented in prominent public and private collections worldwide, including the Art Institute of Chicago, Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes (Havana), Fundación Joan Miró (Barcelona), and the Vatican.
A master of collaboration, Salinas joined word and image in exquisite artists’ books alongside literary figures such as María Zambrano, José Kozer, and Michel Butor—transforming poetry into print and thought into color. These finely crafted editions were published in Geneva, Barcelona, and Urbino. Salinas shall remain a vital voice in the evolution of abstract art and cultural identity, forever being remembered for painting the language of silence, longing, space, and spirit where he found profound meaning in the fleeting in-between moments of a life well-loved and well-lived.
